I have been doing residential alarm systems for many, many years and some people just want the burglar alarm. When I ask them why don’t they want a fire alarm they say, “Oh, I’m not worried about it I have insurance, let it burn down.” And for some people that may be just what they want. Here’s what I tell people, “I have things in my house that have tremendous, sentimental value to me. I have pictures and videos of my kids when they were little, things that my mother left me before she passed away when I was 21 years old. I have things in my home that to someone else would not be worth a wooden nickel, but to me it is absolutely priceless and I don’t want to lose it in a fire.”
Each fire alarm system is different, but in a typical house you want to put smoke detectors inside bedrooms, outside the bedrooms, and at every level. I want to know that if there is a fire in my home the fire alarm is going to go off and the fire department is going to respond to put the fire out. I may have some smoke damage, or even lose a room, but I’m hoping my whole house isn’t going to burn down to the ground because I have a fire alarm that calls the fire department, and that gives me tremendous peace of mind. Fire alarms are great, they save lives but they also protect some of the things that can’t be replaced in life, sentimental stuff.
